While Patti Sue was in the Fargo-Moorhead area in October, we stopped by the Rainbow Shop in Fargo, a Christian book store. I had heard about the concept of short-term missionaries actually doing more harm than good. She recommended that I read, "When Helping Hurts," by Steve Corbett and Brian Fikkert. She told me I wouldn't like it. That made it easy for me to purchase and in preparation for our mission trip, I have started reading.
I am working my way slowly and painfully thru the book. I won't bore you with my impressions, I am struck by how simple it is…Helping often REALLY hurts! It hurts not only the people we seek to serve, but ourselves as well.
If you are interested in mission and the explosion of dollars and short-term missionaries that are being sent out to the "Majority World," I think this book is worth reading. From what I have read so far, I believe this book should be required reading for all short-term missionaries and those who send them.
In two weeks we will be in Shell. The latest I have heard from Tandy, Patti's admin assistant, we will be putting the finishing touches on the Casa de Fe school.
